This bilingual illustrated account tells the true story of one of Hawaiʻi’s most revered patriots, Joseph Nāwahı.̄ In 1892, after being re-elected to the Hawaiian Kingdom’s legislature, Nāwahı̄ was intentionally left behind when fellow lawmakers, unsettled by his return, persuaded the captain of the Dove to depart without him.

With quiet determination and the support of communities along his journey, Nāwahı̄ set out to reach Honolulu before the close of the legislative session. It is a story of perseverance and dedication to his people and his country.

The book is presented in a bilingual, back-to-back format, with one side in Hawaiian and the other in English, offering readers access to the narrative in both languages.
